RESTORING ECHOES OF HERITAGE
Established in 1962, the Sao Pio X Music School was the first institution providing intensive musical training to Macau’s youth. The building, a Portuguese manor house in the neo-classical style, initially built in 1868 and served as the official residence for the British Commercial Superintendent in China. The round moulding and garlands found atop its doors and windows are reflective of the Neo-Baroque deco style popular at the time of its construction. The building later housed the Macau branch of Jardine Matheson, and since 1955 it has been used as a school. After spending over a century and a half at its original location, the building was relocated to a new site in September 2021, a period during which MAO devoted more than three years to its restoration.
