INVITING HISTORY INTO A NEW ERA

The BNU (Banco Nacional Ultramarino), established in Lisbon in 1864, was the very first bank in Macau. The Macau branch itself opened its doors in 1902, at the sunset of Qing dynastic rule. The Portuguese banking company conducted affairs globally, connecting Macau to Portugal’s other former overseas colonies. BNU’s branding—its oceanic blue scheme and seafaring logo—encapsulate the history of the Portuguese Marina.

Renovating a space with such a unique and profound past was a challenge MAO took on with enthusiasm and sensitivity, as we tried to introduce a fresh expression of the brand’s story with great respect paid to its history. Through the conversion of the marine elements to sets of curves and sharp lines, and the introduction of modern materials like marble and metal, we enhanced this historical icon bringing an important element of the Macau’s past into balance with the city’s future.
